Tips for Actors when auditioning

How to best utilize the blog

Subscribe to the blog to become a part of the email listing. Once you have subscribed, you will receive recent updates on the new audition opportunities

Choosing the right audition for you.

Firstly read the heading to figure out whether the audition may fit your characteristics or not. Sometimes the heading does not give out all the sufficient information so click on the post to get further information on what type of characters are needed. Please only audition for roles that are suitable for you.

Audition instructions

Every audition has its own unique set of instructions. Some auditions are hosted at a specific venue so they will provide the address, venue and time. Some auditions are hosted online so they will already have instructions on what needs to be done in order to have a successful audition. Normally online auditions will require you to send details such as your name, surname, age, ethnicity and location along with your headshots and a monologue. Please avoid trying to make conversation with the casting directors as they receive a lot of messages from different people sending in their auditions and they generally don't have the time to be texting back and forth with every individual.

What is a monologue?

A monologue is a long piece of writing that an actor acts out alone. This can sometimes be in the form of a speech or an actor speaking to an unresponsive actor. e.g. a person who is in a comma at the hospital. The production company may either issue out a monologue for you to perform or either give you instructions on the tone in which the monologue should be delivered according to the character they are looking for then you as the actor has to improvise. In some cases the production company may ask you to send in a pre-existing monologue that you have shot in the past.

How to shoot your Monologue.

Firstly, you need to be in a quiet environment so that the external sounds do not interfere with your performance and the lines you will be delivering. Find a wall that is plain and is painted with light colors like yellow, light blue, pink, etc. Preferably a white background works best! It doesn't really matter whether you're using a phone or DSLR camera, what matters is how you set up the shot and your performance. Find someone to shoot the monologue for you, the camera has to be at eye level and the shot has to be between your elbows and your head. Do not leave too much space between the top of your head and the end of the frame. The camera has to be placed in landscape orientation, not in the same way you normally hold your phone when you take selfies. Find a light source such as a ring light or any other light that you can place behind the camera so you can be clearly visible. If you don't have any lights its best to shoot your monologue during the day so you can open all the curtains to allow for natural light. Introduce yourself with a smile, take 3 seconds to become neutral and deliver your monologue.

What's Next?

Once you have gathered up all the requirements for your audition, return to the brief and look for the whatsapp number or email address that you need to submit your audition material to. Production companies normally experience a high influx of auditions so please be patient with them and try and avoid following up. They normally respond to the candidates that are successful so if you do not receive any communication within two weeks you can consider your audition unsuccessful. Don't loose hope though, there are many more opportunities still coming your way!
